Philanthropic Roots

Helping people has been the driving force behind Physician Assistant Rob Casquejo’s dermatology journey since he was in college. Throughout his education, Rob was drawn to healthcare before choosing to go down the PA route, with the goal to always strive to help those in need in whatever way he can.

By founding the Skin and Cancer Center of Scottsdale, Rob knew he would be helping lots of patients find relief from various skin concerns and improve their quality of life. However, he also knew that many people worldwide do not have access to the medical services they need. Rob saw medical missions as one of the best ways he could serve communities in need and provide treatment to those who could not access it on their own. When he founded his practice in 2012, Rob made a vow to himself to go on a medical mission every few years, and he’s kept it ever since.

When selecting his next medical mission, Rob looks for smaller, volunteer-based organizations. He finds that these organizations tend to have the most need for his services, and he’s happy to put in all his effort to help.

Medical Services Provided During Missions

Rob’s medical services for mission work depend on the location and community he serves. In the past, he’s traveled to underserved areas where he has provided dermatology care, such as treating rashes, infections, and tumors. However, he has also been on missions in disaster zones dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters like typhoons and earthquakes. In these cases, he often provides more acute care, such as caring for wounds, burns, and infections.

During his medical missions, Rob has experienced treating a lot of unmanaged chronic issues like eczema, psoriasis, and acne. He will also often treat patients with lesions that need removal, like cysts or lipomas (fatty tumors) that have grown large enough to cause physical problems. Additionally, Rob sometimes treats infections that are not common in the U.S. but are found in the particular region he is serving.

Lasting Impacts

While Rob finds medical mission work extremely rewarding, he admits that it is not without its unique hurdles. One of the greatest challenges Rob has faced in his medical missions is the lack of resources available. Before leaving an in-need community, Rob will refer patients to local care so they are able to follow up somewhere nearby if necessary.

More than anything, Rob has found that participating in medical missions gives him a humble perspective. Whether traveling to Africa, Turkey, the Philippines, or simply serving people in his own community in Scottsdale, he realizes that patients are looking for competent and compassionate care. Rob does everything he can to make sure he meets that need.
